5 Ways to Support Breast Health

October is breast cancer awareness month and as much as I believe we need to fund, support, and promote research, we may be missing some enthusiasm in the preventative department.

Here are 5 things within your control to support breast health

Love your lymphatic system

The lymphatic system works to detoxify and defend against infections. The primary locations for lymph nodes are the groin, underarms (near breast tissue), and neck/head.

Clogged lymph nodes can cause fluid to stagnate and create a breeding ground for bacteria and viruses. To ensure optimal lymphatic drainage, incorperate movement, hydration, and stimulation techniques such as dry brushing and gua sha (shown here).

Remove toxins

Many household products contain toxic ingredients that can be harmful to the body and contribute to excess estrogen. Eliminate fragrances and harmful chemicals from your home, and use products free of parabens, phthalates, fragrances, and aluminum.

Opt for hormone-friendly products like those from Osea and Primally Pure, which offers aluminum-free deodorant (that works!).

Choose organic foods free of glyphosate and other endocrine disrupting pesticides. Organic, local and in season food also offer the most nutrient + mineral dense properties to fuel your metabolism and immune system.

Avoid restrictive clothing

A 2016 study suggests a correlation between breast cancer and restrictive clothing, likely due to the inability of lymph to flow and drain properly. Choose comfortable, wire-free bras instead.

Become familiar with your body

The more familiar you are with your body, the more likely you are to notice changes. Breast tissue changes with fluctuating hormones, so it's best to do monthly self-breast exams following your menstrual cycle. Know what your breasts look and feel like, and if something feels off, talk to your provider.

Understand your risk

Assess your risk by considering factors such as family history, estrogen exposure, age and environment

Take the DUTCH test to learn more about your estrogen production and metabolism pathway. This test can help you understand how your body metabolizes estrogen and whether it's affecting your DNA and contributing to reproductive cancers.

To learn more about the DUTCH test, check out my website or recent podcast episode. Plus, listen to the end for a discount code! Book a free discovery call to see if it's the right option for you.

Making lifestyle changes can feel overwhelming, but I promise you won’t regret learning your body + taking care of yourself. You’re benefiting your whole body and preventing much more than just breast cancer.
